A spectacular epic of life in Roman times. Rome's rulers are up to their usual scheming behaviour over who will rule the empire. As the potential successor, Lucius is very much at risk from his uncle. In the end, Russell Crowe's gladiator hero comes to the rescue and the future for Rome secured. |

Rated: 5 out of 10 Date of review: 2010-05-15 15:17:17 Review: Hello! This is my forty-sixth review. I know this film has alot of fans, but really people, it is a film that doesn't work, especially when you compare it with a film with a similiar theme 1964's "Fall of the Roman Empire. Acting Watch Christopher Plummer as Commodus go crazy in "Fall of the Roman Empire" and compare it to Joaquin Phoenix as Commodus going crazy in "Gladiator" and see who does a better job of acting. Action (IMHO) The action scenes, especially the first battle scenes, were alot more exciting in "Fall of the Roman Empire." Cast "Fall of the Roman Empire" Sophia Loren, Stephen Boyd, Alec Guinness, James Mason, Christopher Plummer, Anthony Quayle, John Ireland, Omar Sharif, Mel Ferrer, etc. "Gladiator" Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Oliver Reed, Richard Harris, Derek Jacobi, David Hemmings, etc. And which film had the better cast? Cinematography Again (IMHO) I thought "Fall of the Roman Empire" had the better cinematography. Lighting I still remember how one scene in "Fall of the Roman Empire" had the scene lit with the sunlight filtering down through the tree leaves. "Fall of the Roman Empire" Spectacle "Fall of the Roman Empire" did spectacle the old fashioned way with human bodies and not by CGI like "Gladiator" "Fall of the Roman Empire" again on this one. This is a film that does not work. | |
